Organize Your Recycling

It's amazing—recycling your paper, cardboard, metal, plastic bags, and rigid plastic can reduce your household waste by nearly half. Recycling protects the environment because it reduces the need to take more resources from the earth and saves energy in making new products.

Now you know why it is important to recycle… how do you do it? When it comes to recycling, it is all about the space to store it in or lack of it. You need a system that is functional and user friendly.

Step 1 - Find a home for the recycling, and make the system fit your family and home size situation. Everything from a small closet space in an apartment, under the counter in a kitchen to a corner in a garage will do.

RecyclingStep 2 - You will need something to put the recycling in. Blue bin recyclables (paper, cardboard, metal, plastic bags, rigid plastic) can go in a simple container or if you have the space, set up a separate bin for each item. It will save time later at the Recycling Depot. A complete list of recyclables is available at Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission

RecyclingLabel the bins so everyone will be able to participate.
In the kitchen, you can use something small like this bin on the left. Once it is full, you can take it to another larger spot or right to your local blue bins. The bins on the right can be tucked into a closet or the corner of the garage right outside the door for easy access.

Step 3 - Off to the blue bins at your local Recycling Depot. Make this a family event. If you have children, get them involved. If your home is anything like mine the kids love to help, and this will surely be a chore that everyone can get involved with. It teaches them about our environment and why we all have to work together every day to preserve it for future generations. Check out this link for a Recycling Depot near you.

Step 4 - Clothing for recycling can be put in an upright hamper. Place this close to the laundry room, and when you notice that something doesn’t fit, pop it in to the bin.

Start a yard sale or donation box for items that have outlived their usefulness. This can be put in a storage area or if you have room, with your other recyclables.

Step 5 - Start a yard sale or donation box for items that have outlived their usefulness. This can be put in a storage area or if you have room, with your other recyclables. Donating to various goodwill agencies - only what you no longer have a use for. It makes sense to rid ourselves of the items that are no longer useful to us but may be useful to someone else.

Step 6 - How to find a home for unwanted/unused items? It’s easy, just check out some of these charitable organizations. Or you can have a yard sale or sell your unwanted items at consignment There are auction houses or second hand clothing shops everywhere that turn your unwanted clothing into cash. http://www.freecycle.org/

It feels good knowing that the things that you once treasured have gone to a good home. Sometimes knowing this makes it a little easier to let go of the things that are really cluttering up our lives.
