7 Steps to Organizing
- Step 1
Make a list of the areas in your home that you want to de-clutter. No job is too big or too small; if it is bothering you jot it down. Think of closets, storage rooms, bedrooms, playrooms, the kitchen or even the junk drawer. Number the items in priority. Which one is bothering you the most? Which will get you the most excited when you are finished.
- Step 2
Make sure you set aside enough time to do the project that you have chosen. This first step is all about success. If you chose the junk drawer you will need at least one hour, you want to be thorough. If you picked a whole room set aside a whole day. The TV organizing shows have many helpers and editing. It really does’t happen in 30 minutes.
- Step 3
Set up your sorting bins. One for recycling, one for donation, one for garbage and the last one for things that need to be moved to another space in the home.
OK I have my bins I am motivated where I start.
- Step 4
In one corner of the room. This is where the FOCUS part of getting organized comes in. If you are really unfocused invite a friend over and have them help, unless they are more unfocused than you and then you will just end up hanging out. So you are working your way around the room and you come across the coveted thing that gets you stuck every time. Ask yourself some valuable questions. Do I love it? Does someone else love it? Do I really need it?
- Step 5
Now that you have purged all of the items that are not staying in the room, closet or whatever it is that you worked on. What next. Give everything that is remaining in that space a home. A logical home where you would naturally look for it. "A place for everything and everything in its place". By giving everything a home you will be able to find anything you need in less than 5 seconds.
- Step 6
Enjoy the fruits of your labor. The room, closet, etc feels lighter, and so will you. You have taken out the things that you no longer need. These things can really weigh you down physically as well as emotionally. You have eliminated the things you no longer need to make space for the wonderful things that will come into your life.
- Step 7
Take the items that belong in another space in the home and deliver them to their home. Deliver the trash to the garbage, the recycling can go to the nearest Blue Bins. Think about where you want to donate the unwanted items. There are many needy people in our communities. The Salvation Army, Romero House, Community Living, St Vincent de Paul, The KV food basket, Hestia House. The list is endless.
